Following a busy 2018, LA-based producer, DJ, and writer Maymind is back with A Site Unseen, his first release on Perpetual Dawn, the club-focused sublabel of Kid606’s Tigerbeat6, out September 06, 2019.
A Site Unseen’s title track sees Maymind wrestling with the canonical, working an acid bass line against a dynamic backdrop of classic 909 drums and bright chord hits. Elsewhere, Maymind shows his willingness to explore, letting a bright synth lead meander over a lean drum machine pulse. Asset 20, meanwhile, works a booming vocal snippet against a driving bassline that is primed for your next acid fix.
Maymind’s first full-length album Illumina (Umor Rex, 2017), blended flanged, wiry drums with thick ambient pads and malleable synth trills. Illumina quickly sold out and drew praise and radio play from WFMU, the Wire, Red Bull Radio, and more. Boomkat summed it up best: “Bittersweet, downbeat electronica ushered in careful, minimalist style with a pop appeal betraying the artist’s indie pop background”.
Another full-length followed Illumina in 2018, this time on upstart Washington D.C. label Atlantic Rhythms. Cheap Storage, a collection of rainy day electronics and left-field beat inquiries, was recorded in a similar manner to Illumina—live and in an improvisatory mode.“Maymind does a lot with very little to make gratifying soundscapes that are very easy to sink into,” Pitchfork writer Philip Sherburne noted in his review of Cheap Storage.
Maymind’s next full-length album, Contoured Euphoria, finds the producer returning to more ambient-inspired territory, and is due on Tigerbeat6 Fall 2019 on limited edition cassette / digital.
