about

Informed by a once-denied nostalgia for aching 90’s R&B pop hits and a deepening love of machine-driven house music, June is the culmination of five years of recording experiments and refinements by LA-based producer Maymind.

Born in the former Soviet Union, Maymind immigrated to New Orleans and grew up in the Midwest before moving to New York City, where he spent his time alternating between playing music with his band Spanish Prisoners, working as a live sound engineer, and slinging drinks in one of the city's biggest nightclubs.

Body music eventually forced its way into Maymind's psyche, and his first solo release came in 2015 on Berlin's New Kanada in the shape of Prophet, a taut three-track EP of Detroit-flavored techno that crammed bright details into its every corner. The title track was praised by a variety of DJs, including Kink and Bedrock’s 3lias for its gnarled, rave-y bass line and skippy drums.

After moving to Los Angeles in 2016, Maymind swapped his laptop for a small tabletop hardware and mixer setup, recording improvisatory “couch jams” that were live and fluid. Three full albums came out of these sessions—Illumina (Umor Rex, 2017), Cheap Storage (Atlantic Rhythms, 2018), and Contoured Euphoria (Tigerbeat6, 2019). The albums include a wide range of sonic touchstones—acid, dub techno, boom bap, and dusty house—showcasing Maymind's deft touch at taking a few simple elements and turning them into a seductive and soulful whole.

Hearing June, it's easy to see this self-described trilogy as just a glimpse of what Maymind is capable of. The album kicks off with “Left to My Own Devices,” a propulsive, momentum-exploring track that still keeps the listener at arm's length, never exploding into full-on club mode. Instead, Maymind explores shifting melancholic textures and a vocal chop that is as seductive as the underlying message is empowering.

Lead single “Find You” sees Maymind returning to the mic for the first time since his Spanish Prisoners days; the track pairs an arpeggiated, undulating synth line with snaking drums and atmospheric touches that suggest more going on beneath the surface. On songs like “Leffert’s Gardens,” a slow build makes room for an anthemic horn melody to take center-stage and carry the listener into a trance.

Maymind is a multi-instrumentalist—he plays guitar, keyboards, bass, and saxophone across the ten tracks of June— and his music favors texture and hypnotism over flashy chops or fancy chord progressions. The simplicity of his arrangements illuminates his strengths as a producer on June. Tracks like "Four Portals" and "All I Wanted" weave complex synth and sample patterns, mixing Fourth World atmospherics with disco-sourced rhythms. Elsewhere the influences of polymaths like Caribou, Four Tet, and even DJ Shadow can be heard in the clever cut-and-paste rearrangements in "We Never Had" and "Fort Greene Faded."

What's most exciting about June is that it finds Maymind reveling in a newfound freedom, unafraid to overstep pre-ordained genre boundaries. The album feels like a first step into a whole new universe for the producer who previously allowed his tracks to live with an unfinished quality.

"This album felt like a culmination of moods that I had been refining for years; and I wanted it to feel like an album made by a studio head that was also a 90's kid at heart. I think growing up listening to a diverse range of music, things like the Avalanches, Bjork, Aaliyah and Timbaland's work, Kanye's first few albums, Caribou, Radiohead, Air and RJD2—all of those influences had some hand in convincing me I really wanted to be a 'Producer', and not just a musician who recorded himself."
